Man Of Gold

Mansa Musa was the 10th Emperor of the Islamic Mali Empire, and took power at a time when the Empire was a source of much of the natural resources used by Europe, Africa and the Middle East. To this day, he is considered to be the wealthiest man that has ever lived. Under Musa’s rule, the empire’s territory, influence and wealth increased even more to eventually include present-day Mali, Senegal, Gambia, Guinea, Niger, Nigeria, Chad and Mauritania.

In 1324, Musa pilgrimaged to Mecca and took 8,000 courtiers, 12,000 slaves, and 100 camels each carrying 300 pounds of gold along with him. When he passed through Egypt during the journey, so much gold flowed that it devalued the metal and led to a currency crisis that took for Egypt 12 years to get out of.
